Week 6 and I’m following up on a lyric I posted last week (see week 5 drippings ~ lyric draft) about a parent explaining why they need to hold a child’s hand. This was a challenge in that I didn’t want to be too repetitive and yet I wanted to drive the lyric home about holding hands. I also wanted to the music to be bouncy like they’re walking down the street or swinging their arms.

I have an issue with so-called “Children’s Music”. I feel that ALL music is music for children. My four and a half year old loves all typed of music, but he enjoys music that has lyrics that are meaningful to him. It seems to me that a lot of kid’s music these days are just silly songs or novelty songs designed to get a kid to laugh. I tend to turn these off because it feels like the performers are really struggling to get the kid to notice them with a goofy song. I like the short repetitive songs on a show my son watches called Yo Gabba-Gabba. The songs are rhythmic and melodic riffs with simple lyrics like “Keep your hands to yourself” repeated over and over.

So what does this say about my song? I don’t know, but I think it’s a song that a parent can listen to with their child. It may even be one of those songs that comes up in the situation at hand. You’re crossing the road and, if you know the song, you start singing “Take my hand- Take my hand”…? Maybe…

This is the bouncy, Courtship of Eddie’s Father version. I went round and round in my head about how to arrange this and finally decided to just spit it out and not orchestrate it just now. It’s fun – it’s silly…

Enjoy – and please leave a comment!
